It is a synthesis gas that is common used in the disinfection treatment.
Chlorine dioxide is an extremely effective disinfectant and bactericide, equal or superior to chlorine on a mass dosage basis.
It is used as both a disinfectant and an oxidant in drinking water treatment. It has several distinct chemical advantages, which complement the traditional use of chlorine in potable water treatment.
It has two different features:
Non-formation of chlorinated compounds;
Having a persistent action to cover disinfection in distribution networks.
Greenish-yellow gas with a pungent smell
Relatively little soluble
High disinfecting power
Speed of action
It does not form chloramines
Influence from pH
The greatest limitation of the chlorine is that there are currently no stable solutions of this reagent, which must be prepared and used immediately after, to avoid degradation.
